This article only applies to our Urban Jungle Contents Insurance, Buildings & Contents Insurance Buildings Only Insurance, Tenants Liability Insurance and Select By Urban Jungle Policies. If you’re unsure about which policy you have, please refer to this article.
This article covers what to do if you’ve got building work planned on your property. You can find the information applicable to your policy type below.
You don’t need to inform us of any building work, planned or ongoing in your property, before or after purchasing your policy, and your cover will not be affected during this time.
However, it's worth noting that there is no cover for loss or damage to your contents arising from demolition, structural alteration or structural repair of the building. This exclusion is detailed in the “Accidental Damage” section of your policy document that you can access through the ‘My Account’ section of our website. If you don’t have a policy with us, you can find this in our sample policy document.
If you have an Urban Jungle Buildings & Contents Policy, we can’t cover you whilst the building work is ongoing, or set to begin, and you will be required to cancel through your online account.
As per our definition of ‘Building Work’ listed in the “Definitions” section of your policy document, we can't provide cover if any building, renovation or decorating work is being conducted or is due to be conducted at the property, which meets one or more of the following criteria:
- Might change the number of bedrooms or bathrooms
- Includes structural changes to walls, ceilings or floors
- Might reduce the security of the property
- Includes any major changes to the plumbing at the property
- Is expected to cost more than £20,000 including VAT
- Where you are required to move out of the home for the work to be undertaken
To be clear, building work does not include:
- Routine maintenance
- Replacing or refitting existing kitchens and bathrooms
- Any ongoing repairs being conducted as part of an ongoing insurance claim (provided that claim has been declared to us in full)
If you plan or become aware of any building work at your home after you've taken out insurance, your policy will no longer be valid and you will be required to cancel. You can cancel your policy through the My Account section of our website, by clicking ‘Manage Policy’. You would be able to take out a new policy once the building work is completed.
For more information, please refer to your policy document that you can access through the ‘My account’ section of our website. If you don’t have a policy with us, you can read more about this in our sample policy document.

If you have our standalone Tenants Liability Insurance then you do not need to inform us of any building work as this doesn’t affect your policy.
If you have a Select by Urban Jungle Insurance policy, then we may be able to cover you for building work when you take out a quote. Should you start building work after taking out this policy, you can also declare this in the My Account section and if we can cover this we will let you know.
We will ask you to declare what types of building work you’re completing, how much this will cost and depending on these factors we will let you know if we can cover you or not. Some examples of building work that we could cover include an extension or a loft conversion.
